The Ancient Empire of Macedonia through the conquests of Alexander the Great
The Australian Institute for Macedonian Studies (AIMS) was formed in August 1986 by a group of academics, teachers and professionals, aiming to promote the cultural and historical identity of Macedonian Hellenism and to conduct research on various domains and disciplines including anthropological, socio-cultural, linguistic and historical pertinent to Hellenism; the scope of studies extends over the wider geographic region of Macedonia from the 11th century BC to the present day, covering the ancient, medieval and post-liberation period.
Professor Dr. Anastasios Myrodis Tamis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. He arrived in Australia in 1971. He studied Modern and Ancient Greek literature and Linguistics and completed his postgraduate and doctoral research on social linguistics and the history of the Greek Diasporas. He was honoured with a Doctorate of Letters (Honoris Causa) by the National University of Athens (2006), the Professional Award by the Hellenic Chambers of Commerce and Industries (2002); a laureate of the Academy of Athens (1995); laureate of the Onassis International Award (2006); laureate of the State Book Award by the Hellenic Republic (2007).
Theofani Karabatsas has been a longstanding member of AIMS. She has provided services to the multicultural community over many years, having been a member of Australia's first Multicultural Council under the late Honourable Michael Mackellar, Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (1975-1979). Her academic qualifications include postgraduate degrees in the Arts and Humanities, including a PhD which she is currently undertaking at Latrobe University.
